Christa McAuliffe Technology Conference 2011 Keynote Speakers
This year we have another GREAT lineup of nationally renowned keynote speakers. The keynote sessions for 2011 include:
Dr. David Rose
CAST Founder & Chief Education Officer, Chief Scientist of Cognition & Learning
Dr. Rose capitalizes on his background in classroom teaching, clinical neuropsychology, and cognitive neuroscience
to develop innovative solutions to challenging problems in education and learning. In 1984, he helped to found CAST
(the Center for Applied Special Technology) with a vision of expanding educational opportunities for all students,
especially those with disabilities, through the innovative use of new technologies. This work led to the development
of the theory and practical framework of Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
For the past 20 years, Dr. Rose has served on the faculty of the Harvard Graduate School of Education where he teaches
a course in Universal Design for Learning and a course called "Cognitive Development, Education, and the Brain" with
Howard Gardner and Kurt Fischer.
Dr. Rose also leads or participates in many of CAST's technology and media development projects that have resulted in
programs that are both award-winning and commercially successful including: Literary Place (Scholastic); Wiggleworks
(Scholastic); Thinking Reader (Tom Snyder/Scholastic); CAST's Bobby (now distributed by IBM); and AMP Reading System (Pearson).
With his CAST colleagues, he has won numerous awards, including the Computerworld/Smithsonian Award for Innovation in Education and
Academia (Laureate, 1993; Finalist, 1999), Tech Museum of Innovation Award (2002), LD Access Foundation Innovation Award (1999),
and the EdNET HERO Award (2005). In 2004, the George Lucas Educational Foundation's Edutopia magazine named him one of education's
"Daring Dozen."

Tuesday Keynote: Meeting the Challenge of Individual Differences
in the Digital Age: Universal Design for Learning
Modern technologies are radically changing the learning and teaching sciences. On the one hand, new technologies
allow us to examine and better understand the roots of individual differences in the learning brain. On the other,
new technologies provide powerful tools for teaching and learning that are flexible enough to meet the challenges
posed by individual differences. In this session we will review the intersection of these two advances in the new
field that is called Universal Design for Learning.

Wednesday Keynote: Technology, Education, & the Student Experience
This interactive talk shows educators the ways in which their students' own experiences can be put to use to make the learning experience better,
for students and teachers alike. Though many students possess great knowledge in various areas, most notably the Internet, it is often treated as
separate from, rather than integral to, the classroom. Corriero knows first-hand that the classroom setting sometimes fails the best and the
brightest in this regard. But this talk isn't about failure. It's about success -- and the things educators can do to make their students vibrant
contributors to their own, and their classmates' education. A new way forward for student involvement and class interaction.
Jennifer also conducts two concurrent sessions on Wednesday in the Rear Armory:
Fully Wired & Fully Mobile: Understanding Generation Y at 10:30 a.m. Taking Their Place in the World: Young People, Technology, & the World They Want at 12:00 p.m. Please see the online catalog for session and workshop descriptions.
Peter Reynolds
Author, Illustrator, & Founder of FableVision
Peter is an accomplished writer, storyteller, and illustrator and brings his enthusiasm and energy to every project he creates.
His best-selling books about protecting and nurturing the creative spirit include The Dot, Ish, and So Few of Me. The North
Star, Peter's cornerstone book, is an allegory that raises questions about how to seek out our own unique path through life.
As a book, curriculum and musical, The North Star has inspired children of all ages around the world.
In 1996, Peter transitioned from his 13-year career as vice president and creative director of Tom Snyder Productions, a leading
educational software producer and publisher, to join his brother Paul in founding their own "social change agency," FableVision, Inc.
Both FableVision Studios and FableVision Learning enjoy an international reputation for their unique brand of innovative,
technology-delivered storytelling and learning.
He recently published Rose's Garden, a heartwarming fable dedicated to the late Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. The SugarLoaf book series,
My Very Big Little World, and The Best Kid in the World, are the first of Peter's many books about an irrepressible little girl who
sees the world through creative-colored glasses.
Much of Peter's spare time is spent giving back to the community ~ revitalizing the businesses in his beloved town, Dedham Square,
supporting schools, and serving on the board of several non-profit organizations, such as Horizons for Homeless Children, Everybody
Wins Metro Boston, and the Dedham Historical Society.
Thursday Keynote: Go Above and Beyond Using the 4 C's ~ Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, & Creativity
Join Peter as he challenges educators to incorporate the 4 C's ~ Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creativity in their approach to teaching
and learning. Peter shares his new short film, "Above and Beyond", created in collaboration with The Partnership for 21st Century Skills. This animated
fable helps show that content mastery without the 4Cs will not provide students with the "wings" required to meet the demands of higher education, career,
and life in a global society and world economy. In addition hear about Peter's six essentials to foster creativity and innovation in the classroom.
Participants leave with a renewed sense of engagement and a practical list of tools to tackle this challenge.
Peter also conducts a concurrent session on Thursday in the Rear Armory:
STEM Becomes STEAM - Connecting the Dots Between the Arts & STEM at 11:30 a.m. Please see the online catalog for session and workshop descriptions. |
