Animals Around the World - Chester Academy's Minigrant Project
Susan Kessler, and Deb Freiburger, Amy Leslie
* E2
Level: Beginner
Grades: K-5
Chester Academy's minigrant project focused on the essential question, What do animals need to survive in the wild versus captivity? Second graders adopted Webkinz from each continent to compare the animals' actual habitat with the virtual habitat at Webkinz.com. Using interactive whiteboards, computers, document camera, digital cameras, digital voice recorders, green screen technology, multimedia software, and the Internet, students collaborated to research how the animal survives in its habitat. They created a model of the animal's habitat, digital and paper animal survival guides, and compared the habitat with the virtual world of Webkinz.com. Chester Academy second grade teachers, Amy Leslie and Deb Freiburger, and technology integration specialist, Susan Kessler, share their successes and challenges they encountered as they implemented the revitalized curriculum unit.
