BYOL: Creating in a Digital Classroom
Geoffrey Gevalt, Executive Director, Young Writers Project, Young Writers Project
* ET
Level: Intermediate
Grades: K-5, 6-8, 9-12
Bring Your Own Laptop (BYOL) to this 3-hour, reduced-price, hands-on workshop. Do you believe writing is the key to learning? This workshop is designed for writing, language arts, foreign language, social studies, science, or history teachers who believe that the answer is yes -- that strong writing skills make deeper learning possible. This interactive and fun session that has three parts: INTRO - A quick look at what teachers and students have achieved using supportive, online classrooms while working with Young Writers Project, a nonprofit dedicated to helping kids write better and to providing teachers with tools to help them instruct. WRITING AND MULTIMEDIA EXERCISES - Participants create, share comments on each other's work, upload images and sound, and a few will create podcasts and video comments for all to see. REFLECTION - The group reflects on what they learned and observed and discuss what kids -- and teachers -- think about these online classrooms. Participants are provided with ideas and resources for setting up their own online spaces for their students. This session is led by Geoffrey Gevalt, an award-winning writer and editor and creator and developer of the Young Writers Project which engages kids to write, helps them improve and finds them authentic audiences online, in newspapers, on radio and on stage. In 2009/10 YWP worked with 165 teachers (who taught 6,500 students) to use digital technology in their classrooms. Gevalt also leads a yearlong Masters Practicum in Digital Writing for teachers through St. Michael's College. YWP is a small nonprofit and may have limited opportunities for additional school partners. Participants who already work with YWP are encouraged to participate in this workshop.

What Kids Can Learn in an Online Writing Classroom
Geoffrey Gevalt, Executive Director, Young Writers Project, Young Writers Project, and Elise Foxall, Richmond Middle School (Hanover)
* ET
Level: Beginner
Grades: K-5, 6-8, 9-12, ELL
In this session, Geoffrey Gevalt, creator and executive director of the Young Writers Project, will show what students have done in YWP's Schools Project -- a comprehensive digital writing classroom and mentoring program. Students share homework and additional work; give and receive feedback; create podcasts, image galleries, slide shows; do collaborative work and embed projects made elsewhere. Two short movies will show what students -- and teachers -- think of these sites which engage kids and transform teaching. Gevalt is accompanied by at least one teacher who is using the site in New Hampshire who will show a couple of things her class has done. There is plenty of time for questions during the presentation. Participants receive handouts about YWP, other sites, and technologies they can use to create an authentic audience in their classrooms.
