Bridging to the Future ~ NASA MESSENGER Space Mission Orbit Insertion
Sally Jensen, Teacher, Waterville Valley Academy
* E2
Level: Beginner
Grades: Pre-K, K-5, 6-8
The NASA MESSENGER spacecraft will maneuver into its orbit insertion with Mercury in March of 2011. This special spacecraft was launched in 2004, on a journey to study the mysterious innermost planet of our Solar system, Mercury. Several organizations across the country have come together to oversee a comprehensive Education and Public Outreach program in support of the mission. The program concentrates on the basic themes of comparative planetary science, Solar System studies through history, and process of designing, construction, and sending a spacecraft to another planet. The focus of this workshop is on how teachers can use MESSENGER Education Modules in the classroom. Participants receive sample lessons that they can incorporate within their science curriculum and fact sheets on various software and internet resources.
