Jump on board this exhilarating ride as you excite and engage students learning using a high-energy computer software program called Roller Coaster Tycoon. Students will discover the fun side of learning as you bring action filled lesson plans back to the classroom. As students design and create their own amusement park watch them take off to new heights of self-directed learning. They will be immersed in the thrill of discovery as they encounter science themes of mass, gravity and friction while regulating their rides. This program allows students to see the application of math, money and business skills in real world situations, reinforcing lessons of income, profit and loss. Or focus your lesson in mapping skills, population diversity, and strategic planning. Teachers will walk away with plans and resources geared to a variety of content areas and grade levels. So grab some vertical Gs as you experience your own hands on thrill ride! |

Making Biology Real: Using Vernier Probes in Real Life Applications Celeste Best, Science Teacher, Oyster River High School SAU 5, and Jonathan Bromley, Oyster River High School SAU 5 |
|
* E2 Level: Intermediate Grades: 9-12 |
How much carbon dioxide does a cricket produce? How much UV radiation does SPF 10 block from your skin? How much air can your lungs hold? These questions are common in the biology classroom. Most of the time a teacher will have an answer. But, have you ever been able to show your students the answer. This workshop is a hands-on experience for high school educators in the fields of biology and anatomy. It focuses on how the use of Vernier technology can bring abstract ideas to life. Several lab stations will be set up and educators will have the opportunity to conduct a lab from beginning to end. The goal is for each educator to do three different labs. Lab topics include blood pressure, heart rate, heart EKG, muscle EMG, lung volume, oxygen absorption, carbon dioxide release, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and UV light absorption. The workshop also includes a presentation about how technology can be used to engage students in inquiry-based learning. |

This session is designed primarily for middle school teachers, but the activities can be adapted for elementary and high school teachers. This session describes a project that uses GPS units and GIS software to record and map the stone walls on the school property. This project teaches the students to navigate using a GPS unit and then use the data collected to create maps. This activity is primarily designed for Social Studies curriculums, but extensions can be created for Science and Mathematics curriculums. Participants leave this session with handouts that contain step-by-step procedures for various GPS/GIS lessons and additional information for more resources (including a link to download a FREE GIS software application for educators). |

Sixth grade students began the school year creating a digital class quilt as a way to get to know one another. T he project integrated digital photography with the writing process. We will have a finished "quilt" on display as well as instructions for the lesson. Using the various writing stages, the students wrote similies, metaphors, adjectivies, nouns and sensory words to describe themselves. They took digital photographs of each other and used photo editing software to add effects to their image. The final product was a class quilt which was on display for Open House. |

We have also had a business owner visit thier classroom. Then studnets research some of the natural materials found in the state. They create their own business and products to sell. Next they use the internet to research market prices and give prices to each item they sell. After students are given an advertising budget and track what they sell in Excel. Students then create a PowerPoint of their information and product. Finally, students on NH day students set up a display with samples of their products and a poster. |

From Classroom Project to ePortfolio Gerry Ryder, Elem. Technology Integration Teacher, Shaker Regional School District, and David Gingrich, Shaker Regional School District |
|
* Grades: All |
In this session, we demonstrate that many educators are already integrating technology into content areas and chances are that the transition from technology project to ePortfolio will go rather smoothly. Sample projects and portfolios for this presentation were created at the elementary level but the ideas can easily be adapted for K-12 classrooms. Examples of ePortfolios presented at the Share-a-Thon are not polished portfolios but experiments in the beginning stages of implementing ePortfolios at the elementary school level. |
