2021 Session
Environmental Data Collection & Data Literacy through the GLOBE Program
Jennifer Bourgeault, Coordinator, GLOBE Program - NH GLOBE Partnership

Level: Beginner
Grades: K-5, 6-8, 9-12
Using the NASA GLOBE Observer app, participants will collect and enter cloud data, land cover type, and a tree height measurement into an international database that is used by students across the world to carry out research. The GLOBE Program, funded by NASA and supported by NSF, NOAA and the U.S. Department of State, has been in existence for over 25 years. It has a suite of environmental measurements K-12 students, and even undergraduate and citizen scientists, collect and analyze, and millions of data for students to explore. We will share some of the student research projects and their affiliated data collection protocols including mosquitos, water quality, soil, weather, biometry measurements, and carbon storage. Participants will delve into two resources for data literacy, My NASA Data (an online resource) and GLOBE Data Exploration learning activities (paper and pencil). NGSS science practices will be highlighted throughout. Not only will participants be ready to collect and enter data using GLOBE Observer after this session, they will learn about classroom-ready activities on data literacy and how to further their learning using the eTraining modules that fit specific curriculum content areas.
