Rethinking Digital Literacy: Digital Natives Navigating Digital Overload
Erin Henderson, Library Media Specialist, Pelham High School, and Jeanna Wagner, Pelham High School
Level: Beginner
Grades: 6-8, 9-12
Despite being "digital natives," all students struggle with discerning the relevance of information that they find on the open Internet. In this session, we will discuss the rapidly changing landscape of information literacy and will evaluate why some of the tried and true strategies that we've been teaching for web searches simply aren't adequate in today's digital environments. We will examine our own struggles to teach information literacy skills and will outline both observed and research-based struggles that students have when navigating this terrain. Most importantly, we will suggest some simple strategies that we can all use to help students verify the relevance of information they find on the web.
